Bangladesh Forms Probe Committee into Gopalganj Violence That Left Four Dead

A top-level committee has been formed in Bangladesh to investigate the Gopalganj violence that left four dead and dozens injured. Headed by the Home Ministry’s senior secretary, the panel will submit its findings in two weeks.

The interim government of Bangladesh has formed a high-level committee to investigate the violent clashes in Gopalganj that resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to dozens more. The decision was announced through a press release issued by the Chief Adviser’s Office on Tuesday.

Nasimul Ghani, senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, will head the inquiry. He will be joined by two additional secretaries—one each from the Ministry of Public Administration and the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the July 14 violence and must submit its findings within two weeks to the Chief Adviser’s Office.

According to the release, “The interim government reiterates its commitment to upholding justice, maintaining public order, and ensuring that those responsible for any unlawful acts, violence and deaths are held accountable in accordance with the law.”

The violence erupted in Gopalganj, a political stronghold of the Awami League, during daylong clashes between law enforcement agencies and Awami League supporters. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as security forces responded with force to dispersed protestors, leaving at least four people dead and dozens injured.

The investigation comes amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh, as the interim government faces increasing pressure to ensure transparency and restore stability ahead of any future elections or political transition.
