COLOMBO, Sept 23 – Sri Lanka has signed a grant agreement with the European Union (EU) to support sustainable economic recovery through biodiversity conservation and improved solid waste management, the Finance Ministry announced on Tuesday.
The partnership will prioritize restoring degraded ecosystems, implementing conservation strategies, and promoting sustainable land-use practices to protect the island nation’s rich biodiversity.
“Biodiversity is one of the most important assets of Sri Lanka, and through this project we will work together to strengthen its protection by improving management of waste,” said EU Ambassador Carmen Moreno, highlighting the dual focus on environmental protection and economic sustainability.
Officials said the initiative aligns with Sri Lanka’s commitments to climate resilience and green economic growth under its post-crisis recovery strategy.
