China has started building a massive dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet’s Nyingchi City, near the Line of Actual Control with India. The project, reportedly the world’s largest hydroelectric dam, has raised concerns in India and Bangladesh — both downstream countries.
However, China insists the dam will not affect water flow to either nation. Premier Li Qiang announced the construction over the weekend, describing it as a step towards renewable energy goals.
The dam is being built on the Yarlung Zangbo (as Brahmaputra is called in China), in a region known for its ecological fragility and political sensitivity.
India is closely monitoring the development, given the dam’s proximity to Arunachal Pradesh and its potential geopolitical implications.
