Bangladesh tribunal likely to set verdict date tomorrow in Sheikh Hasina’s July uprising case

Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal may announce the verdict date on Wednesday in the crimes against humanity case against Sheikh Hasina and others over the 2024 July uprising.

DHAKA: (Oct 22) The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) may on Wednesday announce the date for delivering its verdict in the case over crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the July uprising, involving ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who later became an approver.

Prosecutor Mizanul Islam told reporters at the ICT premises that the prosecution would submit its final reply tomorrow, after which Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam and the Attorney General are expected to deliver their concluding statements.

“Once the arguments conclude, the tribunal is expected to formally set the date for the verdict,” Mizanul said.

Earlier in the day, state-appointed defence lawyer Md Amir Hossain completed his arguments for Hasina and Asaduzzaman, claiming their innocence and seeking acquittal after three days of hearings.

The arguments were heard by Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder.

Hasina and Asaduzzaman are being tried in absentia for their alleged roles in directing state agencies to commit atrocities during the 2024 July uprising that toppled her government. Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun turned approver in the case earlier this month.
