India: Delhi Sees Drop in Birth Rate, Sex Ratio in 2024: Official Report

Delhi’s annual report shows a decline in both birth rate and sex ratio in 2024, with officials calling for stronger health and gender awareness efforts.

NEW DELHI, Sept. 15: Delhi has recorded a decline in both birth rate and sex ratio in 2024, according to the latest annual report on Registration of Births and Deaths released by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics along with the Office of Chief Registrar (Births & Deaths).

The sex ratio in the national capital fell to 920 females per 1,000 males in 2024, compared to 922 in the previous year. The birth rate was calculated at 14 per 1,000 population, down from 14.66 in 2023.

The report also noted a slight rise in the death rate, which stood at 6.37 per 1,000 population in 2024, as against 6.16 the year before.

Officials said the findings underscore the need for sustained public health initiatives and gender balance awareness campaigns in Delhi.
