Sri Lanka to Launch Scholarship Programme for Children of Overseas Workers Facing Hardship

Sri Lanka will introduce scholarships for children of overseas workers facing hardships, with citizenship as the only eligibility criterion.

Colombo, September 8: The President’s Fund will soon introduce a scholarship programme to support the education of children in Sri Lanka whose parents working overseas have died, become disabled, gone missing, or faced severe hardships, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced.

The initiative, aligned with the principle of “Leaving no one behind in education,” will be a joint effort by the President’s Fund, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).

The programme was discussed at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of Minister Vijitha Herath, with Senior Additional Secretary to the President and Secretary to the President’s Fund Roshan Gamage also in attendance.

Officials confirmed that Sri Lankan citizenship will be the sole eligibility criterion for these scholarships. Detailed guidelines on the selection and awarding process will be released shortly.

The President’s Fund already runs a similar scheme for children of victims of wild elephant attacks and plans to extend welfare initiatives into other areas in the future.
