Chief Justice of India Visits Nepal to Strengthen Judicial Cooperation

Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai visited Nepal for judicial cooperation talks, building on recent India-Nepal bilateral initiatives in defence, energy, and connectivity.

Kathmandu (Nepal), September 6: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is on an official visit to Nepal from September 4 to 7 at the invitation of Nepal’s Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut.

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu announced the visit on X, noting that the Indian Chief Justice addressed members of Nepal’s judicial and legal fraternity during the India-Nepal Judicial Dialogue. The dialogue focused on the evolving role of the judiciary, recent jurisprudence, and ongoing judicial reforms.

This visit comes after the Supreme Courts of India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in April 2025 to deepen judicial cooperation. The first meeting of the Joint Working Group formed under the MoU was also held during Justice Gavai’s visit.

The trip highlights India-Nepal collaboration across various fronts. It follows Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s two-day visit to Nepal in August, where he extended an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to visit India.

During his visit, Misri held talks with top Nepalese leaders, including President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, and Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in areas like connectivity, defence, security, and energy.

The Indian Foreign Secretary also handed over defence stores, critical care medical equipment, Light Strike Vehicles (LSVs), and military animals to the Nepali Army, further enhancing defence collaboration.

India reiterated that Nepal remains a priority partner under the Neighbourhood First policy, and both nations expressed satisfaction over progress in diverse sectors, including digital and physical connectivity, defence, and energy cooperation.
