India Alerts Pakistan About Potential Flood in Tawi River Amid Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

India has reportedly warned Pakistan of a possible flood in the Tawi River, though no official confirmation has been issued by either side.

Islamabad, August 25: India has alerted Pakistan about a potential flood in the Tawi River, according to a media report, even as the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) remains suspended following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Citing official sources, The News reported that Indian authorities contacted Pakistan to share information regarding possible flooding in the Tawi River, a tributary of the Chenab. However, neither India nor Pakistan has officially confirmed the development.

Typically, such flood-related data is shared through the offices of the Indus Water Commissioners of both countries under the framework of the IWT. With the treaty currently in abeyance, the alert underscores the urgency of information-sharing mechanisms between the two neighbors, especially during the monsoon season.

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 with World Bank mediation, governs the distribution of water from six major rivers between India and Pakistan. It also provides for information-sharing and flood warnings, which play a critical role in disaster prevention and management.

The fresh report comes at a time of heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, raising questions about whether existing mechanisms for water cooperation can function independently of broader political disputes.
