India Needs Strong Pool of International Mediators: SIMC

Singapore International Mediation Centre CEO says India must build a strong pool of international mediators to resolve growing trade and contract disputes.

Singapore (Aug 23): India must strengthen its pool of international mediators to handle the growing number of cross-border trade and contract disputes as its economy expands at 6.5 percent, according to the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC).

“We are seeing an increasing number of mediation cases from India, which is a global market and a leading member of the global supply chain. This means there is an urgent need to build mediation capacity in the country,” SIMC Chief Executive Officer Chuan Wee Meng told PTI on Friday.

Mediation is gaining traction worldwide as a faster and more cost-effective alternative to arbitration, especially for businesses seeking timely dispute resolution. The SIMC, which has handled cases from 68 jurisdictions, is preparing to restart training programmes for international mediators. These will include legal experts from India to meet the rising demand for neutral dispute resolution mechanisms.

Experts note that with India’s growing role in global supply chains, strengthening mediation frameworks could help businesses avoid prolonged litigation and foster investor confidence.
