NEW DELHI, July 25 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially surpassed Indira Gandhi to become the second longest-serving prime minister in India’s history with an unbroken tenure in office.
As of Friday, Modi has completed 4,078 consecutive days as head of government since first taking office on May 26, 2014. In comparison, Indira Gandhi held office for 4,077 uninterrupted days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.
The only leader ahead of Modi is Jawaharlal Nehru, who served continuously as India’s first prime minister from 1947 until his death in 1964.
Like Nehru, Modi has led his party to three consecutive general election victories—in 2014, 2019, and 2024—securing his place as a dominant figure in Indian political history.
The milestone reflects both his sustained public support and the BJP’s electoral hold, with Modi now well into his third consecutive term.
