Colombo, 25 October, 2025: Sri Lanka has set up a committee of veterinarians to assess the health of two elephants gifted by Thailand, after Bangkok expressed concern over their wellbeing. Officials confirmed the move on Saturday amid growing attention from conservation groups and Thai authorities.
Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakodi stated that initial examinations by local veterinarians showed no major health problems. He explained that the elephants’ temporary weakness could be linked to the natural “musk” phase, during which male elephants often refuse food.
Jayakodi added that the Sri Lankan government would continue following expert advice and implement all veterinary recommendations to ensure the animals’ proper care.
