According to police, motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire on Special Branch officer Muhammad Qayyum at Shakus Ground in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber district, killing him on the spot before fleeing the area.

Soon after the incident, a large police contingent rushed to the site, sealed off the locality, and launched an extensive search operation to track down the attackers. Authorities said investigations are underway, though no militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly districts near the Afghanistan border, has witnessed repeated attacks on security personnel amid a resurgence of militant violence in recent years.
