DHAKA (Oct 4) — At least 417 people were killed and 682 others injured in 446 road crashes across Bangladesh in September, according to data released on Saturday by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).
The monthly report, compiled from national and regional media coverage, paints a grim picture of the country’s road safety situation. Among the victims were 63 women and 47 children.
Motorcycles were involved in a large proportion of the accidents — 151 crashes that claimed 143 lives, representing 34.29% of all deaths and 33.85% of total reported crashes.
The report also noted a worrying number of pedestrian deaths, with 112 fatalities — accounting for 26.85% of all deaths.
Meanwhile, 56 drivers and their assistants were among those killed, making up 13.42% of the total fatalities.
Road crashes continue to be one of Bangladesh’s leading causes of unnatural deaths, often linked to speeding, reckless driving, poor road conditions, and lax enforcement of traffic regulations, according to the foundation.
