Gen Z Protests Inflict Rs 25 Billion Loss on Nepal’s Hotel Industry

Nepal’s hotel industry has lost over Rs 25 billion after student-led Gen Z protests vandalised and torched properties across major cities, industry body says.

KATHMANDU, Sep. 12: Nepal’s hotel industry, a key pillar of its tourism-driven economy, has suffered damages exceeding 25 billion Nepalese rupees following the recent student-led anti-government protests, according to a report by My Republica on Friday.

The Hotel Association Nepal (HAN) said nearly two dozen hotels across major cities were vandalised, looted, or set ablaze during the unrest. The Hilton Hotel in Kathmandu alone reported damages worth over Rs 8 billion, making it the single worst-hit property.

Other affected locations include hotels in Pokhara, Butwal, Bhairahawa, Jhapa, Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Mahottari, and Dang-Tulsipur. Industry leaders warn that the destruction will have long-term consequences for Nepal’s tourism sector, which is already struggling to recover from pandemic-era losses.
