BEIJING, September 4: Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized US President Donald Trump for using what he called “colonial-era pressure tactics” on leaders of major economies such as India and China, saying this approach is neither effective nor respectful toward sovereign nations.
Speaking to reporters while attending China’s Victory Parade on Wednesday, Putin said countries with large populations and powerful economies like India and China have their own political systems, laws, and historical experiences that must be respected.
“When somebody tells you they are going to punish you, you have to think about how the leadership of those countries—those big countries that have gone through difficult periods in their history—will react,” Putin remarked, implying that pressure and threats often backfire in international diplomacy.
The comments come amid rising tensions between Washington and several Asian nations over trade policies, technology regulations, and geopolitical alignments. Both India and China have recently pushed back against Western economic pressure while strengthening ties with Russia and regional partners.
