New Delhi/Thimphu, August 28: India and Bhutan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors, marking a new milestone in the two countries’ longstanding partnership.
The agreement was signed in Thimphu by Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Mr. Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan.
The MoU aims to promote collaboration in agricultural research and innovation, livestock health and production, post-harvest management, food processing, value chain development, and the exchange of expertise and technology. It reflects the shared commitment of both nations to food security, sustainable farming, and rural prosperity.
Following the signing, the first Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) meeting was convened, where both sides finalized the Terms of Reference and identified priority areas for immediate collaboration. Key discussions covered agriculture, livestock, agricultural marketing, cooperatives, seed sector development, research and technology partnerships, and capacity-building initiatives.
During the session, Shri Chaturvedi highlighted India’s focus on climate-resilient farming practices, digital solutions for agriculture, and risk-mitigation measures to support farmers. Both sides also agreed to hold the next JTWG meeting in India at a mutually convenient date.
The visit of India’s Agriculture Secretary to Bhutan is part of the tradition of regular exchanges between the two neighbors and underlines the countries’ close ties in advancing agricultural cooperation and sustainable development.
