Sri Lanka to Reclaim State Housing from Former Presidents, Says President Dissanayake

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged to end lifetime state housing for former Presidents, calling it unfair during an economic crisis.

Colombo, August 26: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced on Tuesday that the government will reclaim all state-owned houses allocated to former Presidents once new legislation is passed in September.

Speaking at a public event in Colombo, Dissanayake said the move is aimed at ending political privileges that undermine public trust and ensuring equality before the law.

“The law will be enforced equally on all citizens. Those found guilty of corruption will face strict punishment, no matter their position or influence,” he said.

The President argued that providing luxury state housing for former leaders at a time when Sri Lanka is still grappling with an economic crisis was unjustifiable. “We cannot continue to burden the people with unnecessary expenses while asking them to make sacrifices,” he added.

The proposed law is expected to spark debate in political circles, as it directly challenges the long-standing practice of extending lifetime privileges to former heads of state.

Analysts say the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline and accountability, while also sending a strong message against excesses in governance.
