Bangladesh, August 8: Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said the date for the country’s next national election will be disclosed two months before the official schedule is announced.
Speaking at a views-exchange meeting on the upcoming polls at the Election Commission’s Rangpur regional office on Saturday, Nasir Uddin said preparations are under way to conduct the election within a short timeframe despite multiple challenges.
“Restoring public trust in the election system is now a major challenge. People have lost confidence in the process. Bringing them back to the polling centres will be a big task,” the CEC said. He also clarified that the election schedule is unlikely to be announced immediately.
Nasir Uddin stressed that the commission would not work in favour of or against any political party. “We will work on behalf of the 18 crore people of the country,” he said.
The CEC also warned about the spread of misinformation on social media, particularly through artificial intelligence, and said the Election Commission is working to address it.
Calling on citizens to exercise their voting rights, Nasir Uddin described casting a ballot as both a civic duty and a moral responsibility.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to making the highest possible efforts to ensure the upcoming parliamentary elections are held in a transparent and credible manner.
