New Delhi, July 22 – Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as the Vice President of India on Monday, citing health concerns as the reason behind his sudden decision. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said he was stepping down to prioritise his health in accordance with medical advice.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” the letter read.
Dhankhar, who took office in August 2022, said it had been a “privilege and satisfaction” to serve during a transformative period in India’s development. He noted the country’s remarkable economic progress and “unprecedented exponential development” as hallmarks of his term.
“Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honour,” Dhankhar stated in his resignation note.
His resignation marks a significant moment for Indian politics, as it comes amid a busy Monsoon Session of Parliament. The government is expected to announce the process for electing the next Vice President in the coming days.
