PM Shehbaz Sharif at UNGA: Vows Peace, Defends Pakistan After India Clash, Highlights Kashmir and Palestine

PM Shehbaz Sharif at UNGA vows peace but defends Pakistan after India clash, highlights Kashmir, Palestine, climate justice, and praises Trump for ceasefire role.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 27 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday used his third address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to call for peace, dialogue, and resolution of long-standing disputes but vowed Pakistan would firmly defend itself against external aggression and any attempt by India to seize its water rights.

Speaking at the 80th UNGA session for 25 minutes, Shehbaz condemned human rights violations in Kashmir and Palestine, denounced terrorism, and outlined Pakistan’s positions on regional conflicts, climate change, and multilateral cooperation.

Highlights from Shehbaz’s Address

  • India-Pakistan War: Shehbaz recalled the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, saying India launched “unprovoked aggression” after the Pahalgam incident but Pakistan responded decisively.

  • He credited Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Pakistan’s armed forces for “a stunningly professional and brave operation” that downed seven Indian fighter jets.

  • “We have won the war, and now we seek to win peace,” Shehbaz said, offering “composite, comprehensive and result-oriented” dialogue with India on all disputes.

Trump’s Role in Ceasefire

Shehbaz said the ceasefire was facilitated by US President Donald Trump’s “bold and visionary leadership,” preventing escalation between two nuclear-armed neighbors.

“Had he not intervened decisively, consequences would have been catastrophic,” Shehbaz told world leaders, adding Pakistan had nominated Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Kashmir and Indus Waters Dispute

Shehbaz accused India of:

  • Human rights violations in Kashmir

  • Unilaterally holding the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, calling any such violation an “act of war”

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Kashmir’s right to self-determination through a UN-backed plebiscite.

Climate Change and Multilateralism

The prime minister also highlighted:

  • Flood devastation in Pakistan displacing millions

  • The need for climate justice and multilateral cooperation to tackle global crises
