Pakistan court overturns death sentences in 2014 Wagah border suicide attack case

A Lahore High Court bench has acquitted three men sentenced to death for the 2014 Wagah border suicide bombing that killed over 60 people, overturning their convictions from 2020.

LAHORE (Nov 5): A Pakistani court has acquitted three men previously sentenced to death for their alleged role in the 2014 Wagah border suicide attack that killed over 60 people and injured more than 100, a court official said on Wednesday.

A division bench led by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi of the Lahore High Court set aside both the death penalties and 300-year prison terms handed to the convicts — Haseenullah Haseena, Habibullah, and Syed Jan alias Gajni — by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in 2020.

The trio had been accused of belonging to the banned militant group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, which had claimed responsibility for the deadly bombing near the Wagah border ceremony in November 2014.

Their appeals were allowed by the High Court on Tuesday, effectively clearing them of all charges related to the attack, which was among Pakistan’s deadliest terror incidents that year.
