Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to 48-hour ceasefire after deadly border clashes

Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire following deadly clashes along the border that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.

ISLAMABAD (Oct 15) – Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire following days of deadly cross-border fighting that left dozens of troops and civilians dead, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.

“The Pakistani government and the Afghan Taliban regime — at the Taliban’s request — have decided to implement a temporary ceasefire starting from 6 p.m. (01:00 GMT) today for the next 48 hours,” the ministry said in a statement.

The announcement comes after a series of intense clashes along the Spin Boldak–Chaman border, where Pakistani forces repelled multiple attacks by Afghan Taliban militants, reportedly killing more than 40 attackers.

There has been no immediate response from the Taliban authorities in Kabul regarding the truce.

Tensions have escalated in recent weeks amid Islamabad’s accusations that Afghan territory is being used by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to launch cross-border strikes, a claim the Taliban government has repeatedly denied.

The ceasefire is seen as a temporary measure aimed at preventing further escalation, with diplomatic channels between the two sides expected to remain open for de-escalation talks.
