BEIJING, Oct 24: China on Friday confirmed that President Xi Jinping will travel to South Korea to attend the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju, where he is set to hold a high-stakes meeting with US President Donald Trump amid renewed trade tensions.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters that Xi will visit South Korea from October 30 to November 1 at the invitation of South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, marking Xi’s first visit to the country in several years.
The White House earlier announced that Trump and Xi will meet on October 30 on the sidelines of the APEC Summit to discuss bilateral trade issues, global supply chain resilience, and regional security concerns.
Observers say the meeting could help reset strained US-China relations, which have deteriorated following Washington’s new tariffs and Beijing’s retaliatory measures on technology exports.
Xi’s South Korea visit is expected to include bilateral talks with President Lee focused on economic cooperation, semiconductor supply chains, and North Korea’s regional provocations.
