Computer Literacy in Sri Lanka Drops to 35.9% in 2024: Census Data

Only 35.9% of Sri Lankans were computer-literate in 2024, a drop of 3.1 points from 2023, census data shows.

COLOMBO, Sept 27 – Only two out of five Sri Lankans were computer-literate in 2024, with 64.1% of the population unable to use a computer, according to the Department of Census and Statistics.

The department’s latest report revealed that computer literacy fell by 3.1 percentage points compared to 2023, marking a worrying decline in digital skills across the country.

Officials said the survey measured basic computer literacy, including the ability to operate a desktop or laptop for everyday tasks such as typing, internet browsing, and using standard software applications.

Digital literacy is considered critical for Sri Lanka’s economic development and employment opportunities, especially as the government pushes for ICT adoption in education, administration, and private enterprises.
