18 Awami League Leaders, Activists Arrested in Dhaka Crackdown

Dhaka police arrested 18 Awami League leaders and activists in separate raids in Darussalam and Mirpur for anti-government activities.

DHAKA, Sept. 12: Police detained 18 leaders and activists linked to the banned Awami League and its associate bodies in separate operations in Darussalam and Mirpur areas on Wednesday.

According to police, twelve men were arrested by Darussalam Police around 3:40 pm while they were preparing to stage a flash procession at the Technical Intersection. Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team rushed to the scene with help from locals and detained them, while several others managed to escape.

The arrestees included Al Amin (32), Akkas Mia (52), Sohel Majhi (38), Nesar Mia (48), Yusuf Ali (48), Faruk Hossain (47), Mokbul Mridha (54), Manik Mia (38), Shahin (50), Nayeem (25), Emdadul Haque (37), and Abdul Alim (22).

In a separate drive, Mirpur Model Police arrested six more individuals near Paikpara Type Staff Quarters at 2:45 pm. Police said they were part of a group holding a secret meeting and chanting anti-government slogans. Those arrested were Jewel Rana (35), Al Noman Saif (29), Julhas (26), Imon Hossain Khan Manik (25), Sagar Hossain (27), and Ohidul Islam Suman (33).

Authorities confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against all the detainees.
