Bhutan, India Sign Historic 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project Agreement

Bhutan PM Tshering Tobgay called the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project agreement with Adani Power a milestone in Bhutan-India clean energy and bilateral relations.

New Delhi(India), September 6: Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay hailed the signing of the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project agreement between Adani Power Ltd. and Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) as a “historic milestone” in Bhutan-India clean energy cooperation.

Tobgay shared the development on X, noting that the project marks a significant step in the two countries’ shared commitment to renewable energy and sustainability.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met the Bhutanese Prime Minister in Delhi, extending greetings on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that the India-Bhutan partnership is “unique and time-tested,” strengthening across energy, cultural, and strategic sectors.

As part of his ongoing India visit, Tobgay, accompanied by his spouse Aum Tashi Doma, visited the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Temple in Ayodhya on Friday. The couple offered prayers, took part in rituals, and toured the temple premises, underlining the deep spiritual ties between the two nations.

The Wangchhu Hydropower Project adds to Bhutan’s long-standing collaboration with India on hydropower development, which has been central to bilateral relations and energy trade in South Asia.
