Colombo, August 26: A Sri Lankan court on Tuesday granted bail to former president Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was in remand custody on allegations of misusing public funds.
The proceedings were held virtually, with Wickremesinghe joining from the Intensive Care Unit of Colombo National Hospital under heavy security. Large crowds gathered outside the court, staging protests over the corruption charges.
The case was heard by Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura, who conducted the session via Zoom before granting bail.
The corruption case against Wickremesinghe has sparked renewed political debate in Sri Lanka, where the former president continues to face public scrutiny over his time in office.
