MALE, July 25 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu held wide-ranging talks in Malé on Friday aimed at resetting the relationship after a period of diplomatic tension. The two leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, defence, and infrastructure, signalling a fresh chapter in bilateral engagement.
Modi arrived in the Maldivian capital to a warm welcome, received personally by President Muizzu and several cabinet ministers at Velana International Airport. This high-level reception reflected Malé’s renewed diplomatic emphasis on ties with New Delhi.
Later in the day, Modi was honoured with a ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour at the Republic Square, underscoring the symbolic significance of the visit.
The visit is being closely watched in the region, given Muizzu’s earlier anti-India rhetoric during his presidential campaign, followed by signs of recalibration after assuming office. New Delhi is expected to reaffirm its commitment to supporting the Maldives’ economic development and security architecture, including maritime cooperation and joint infrastructure projects.
The leaders are also expected to discuss progress on ongoing development projects financed by India and review strategic concerns in the Indian Ocean Region.
