Sri lankan president against racism: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Thursday assured the country’s minority Tamil community that his government is committed to building a racism-free nation founded on national unity and equal rights.
Addressing a gathering in Jaffna, the cultural heartland of Sri Lankan Tamils, during celebrations marking Thai Pongal, the president acknowledged the trust placed in his leadership by Tamil voters at the last general election.
“For the first time, we won the Jaffna District, which means you have placed your trust in us,” Dissanayake said, referring to his party’s electoral breakthrough in the Tamil-majority region.
He pledged that his administration would not betray that confidence. “I assure you that we will not allow that trust to be betrayed even in the slightest. We will build a country free of racism and rich in national unity, and we will create a better future for your children,” the president said.
Dissanayake’s remarks come amid renewed efforts by his government to promote ethnic reconciliation and heal divisions left by decades of civil conflict and political marginalisation of minority communities.
