Lahore, August 29: At least 22 people were killed in the past 24 hours as devastating floods swept across Pakistan’s Punjab province, submerging parts of Lahore and thousands of surrounding villages, officials said Friday.
According to a statement from the Punjab government, nearly 1,700 villages have been inundated while grain crops spread across thousands of acres are now underwater. At least nine residential areas in Lahore city itself were submerged after floodwaters entered the provincial capital.
Rescue teams, including units from the army and civil institutions, have evacuated over one million people so far. The government described the situation as “extremely high floods” in the eastern rivers — the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab — which have caused widespread damage and claimed at least 22 lives.
Authorities said relief and rehabilitation operations are underway, but the sheer scale of the disaster has strained local resources.
