New Delhi(India), September 6: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Saturday underlined the strength of India-US ties after Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded positively to US President Donald Trump’s recent comments on bilateral relations.
“PM Modi attaches enormous importance to our partnership with the US. He has always had a very good personal equation with President Trump. We remain engaged with the US, and at this time, I can’t say more than that,” Jaishankar told reporters.
His remarks came hours after PM Modi, in a post on X, said India and the US share a “very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership” and that he “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates” President Trump’s sentiments.
Trump, speaking at the White House on Friday, had called the India-US relationship a “very special one,” stressing that he and PM Modi would “always be friends.”
“I always will. I’ll always be friends with (PM) Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister. But I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment,” Trump said when asked about recent strains in ties, referring to India’s purchase of Russian oil amid rising tariffs imposed by Washington.
The US President also clarified that he did not believe India and Russia had aligned fully with China, despite his earlier post on Truth Social expressing concern over India-Russia-China ties.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that the India-US partnership is anchored in “shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties,” adding that it has “weathered several transitions and challenges” over the years.
