AMARAVATI, INDIA (Oct 30): The severe cyclonic storm Montha has caused widespread damage across Andhra Pradesh, resulting in an estimated loss of ₹5,265 crore, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference at the state Secretariat, Naidu said the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department alone suffered losses worth ₹2,079 crore, making it the worst-affected sector. The cyclone, which lashed several coastal districts earlier this week, damaged roads, public infrastructure, power lines, and crops over large areas.
“The initial assessment indicates losses across multiple departments, including housing, irrigation, agriculture, and power. Detailed enumeration is still underway,” the Chief Minister said, adding that rapid relief and restoration work had been initiated in all affected regions.
Naidu said his government would soon submit a comprehensive report to the Union government seeking financial assistance for rebuilding efforts. He also praised rescue teams and local administration for their “timely response” in minimizing casualties during the cyclone.
Montha, which made landfall along the state’s northern coast, brought torrential rain and strong winds exceeding 100 km/h, leading to flooding and large-scale disruption of transport and electricity.
Officials said assessment teams are still compiling data from the most affected districts, including Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam, where hundreds of homes were damaged and agricultural fields inundated.
