Bangladesh inflation eases slightly to 8.17% in October on lower food prices

Bangladesh’s inflation eased to 8.17% in October from 8.36% in September as food prices fell slightly, though non-food inflation rose to 9.13%, according to BBS data.

DHAKA (Nov 6): Bangladesh’s general point-to-point inflation eased to 8.17 per cent in October, down from 8.36 per cent in September, driven mainly by a slowdown in food prices, according to data released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Food inflation dipped to 7.08 per cent in October from 7.64 per cent the previous month, reflecting a modest easing in prices of key staples and perishables.

However, non-food inflation edged higher to 9.13 per cent from 8.98 per cent, indicating continued pressure from housing, health, and transport costs, local media reported.

The BBS data also showed a rural-urban divide — inflation declined in rural areas, while urban inflation rose slightly, reflecting varying consumption patterns and supply dynamics.

Economists said that while the marginal fall offers some relief, inflation remains well above the government’s target of 6.5 per cent for the fiscal year. They attributed the sustained price pressures to a mix of global commodity volatility, domestic supply chain constraints, and the continued depreciation of the taka.
