Afghan Opposition Leaders, Activists Call for Political Office in Islamabad

Afghan opposition leaders and activists at a conference in Islamabad demanded a political office to counter the Taliban, saying the Islamic Emirate does not represent the Afghan people.

Islamabad, Oct 1 (PTI) – Afghan opposition leaders and civil society activists have demanded the creation of a political office in Islamabad to step up pressure on the Taliban-led interim government, arguing that the Islamic Emirate does not represent the Afghan people.

The demand was raised at a two-day closed-door conference titled “Towards Unity and Trust”, held on September 29–30 in Islamabad. The meeting was hosted by the South Asian Strategic Stability Institute University (SASSI) with support from the Geneva-based Women for Afghanistan (WFA).

At least 37 Afghan opposition figures, including women leaders, attended the discussions. Organisers said the aim was to create a united platform for political dialogue and international advocacy on Afghanistan’s future.

The call for a political office in Pakistan’s capital highlights growing dissatisfaction among Afghan opposition groups in exile, who accuse the Taliban of excluding women and minorities from governance and failing to meet international human rights commitments.
