India’s Foreign Secretary Misri at SCO Plus: Pushes UN Reform, Counter-Terror Focus

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin called for UN reform, counter-terror cooperation, and sustainable development, while affirming Modi raised terrorism concerns with China.

TIANJIN, September 1: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri represented India at the SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin, underscoring the need for United Nations reform, counter-terrorism cooperation, and sustainable development.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on X that Misri highlighted India’s readiness to share its expertise and initiatives in sustainable growth with SCO partners.

The meeting came a day after Misri briefed reporters that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue of cross-border terrorism with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their bilateral talks on the sidelines of the SCO summit on August 31.

“The Prime Minister outlined that terrorism is a scourge that both India and China have been victims of, and sought Beijing’s support. The Chinese side has extended support in various ways to address this,” Misri said at the MEA briefing.

He added that Modi and Xi also discussed steps to balance bilateral trade, strengthen people-to-people ties, cooperate on trans-border rivers, and combat terrorism jointly.
