Seven Monks, Including Indian National, Killed in Sri Lanka Cable Rail Cart Accident

Seven Buddhist monks, including an Indian national, were killed when a cable rail cart overturned at a historic Sri Lankan forest monastery. Six others injured.

COLOMBO, Sept 26 – At least seven Buddhist monks, including nationals from India, Russia, and Romania, were killed when a cable-operated rail cart overturned at the Na Uyana Aranya Senasanaya monastery in northwestern Sri Lanka, police said Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night in Nikaweratiya, about 125 km from Colombo. Police confirmed that six others were injured, with four monks in critical condition.

Investigation Underway

Authorities said the rail cart, used to transport people and supplies up the monastery’s steep hillside, apparently lost control while descending. Images from the site showed monks gathered along the cart’s track, which runs parallel to a stone staircase leading to the monastery’s higher grounds.

Police have launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident.

Monastery with Ancient Roots

The Na Uyana Aranya Senasanaya monastery, famed for its meditation retreats and spiritual training, traces its history to the 3rd century BCE, making it one of Sri Lanka’s oldest forest monasteries.

Today, it is home to over 200 monks and is regarded as one of the country’s most significant Buddhist forest complexes, attracting both local and international visitors.
