Nepal PM K P Sharma Oli Leaves for China to Attend SCO Summit, Meet Xi Jinping

Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli is on a five-day official visit to China to attend the SCO Summit and meet President Xi Jinping, with talks expected on trade and regional security.

Kathmandu, Nepal | August 30: Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli departed for China on Saturday for a five-day official visit, during which he will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The visit, scheduled from August 30 to September 3, comes at the invitation of President Xi. According to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oli will represent Nepal at the SCO Summit, which brings together leaders from across Asia to discuss regional security, economic cooperation, and connectivity.

In addition to attending the summit, Prime Minister Oli will participate in the 80th anniversary commemoration of the “Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.”

The bilateral meeting with President Xi is expected to focus on strengthening Nepal-China ties, with discussions likely covering trade, connectivity projects under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and regional security cooperation within the SCO framework.

This is Oli’s first official visit to China since returning to office earlier this year. Analysts in Kathmandu say the trip underscores Nepal’s efforts to balance its foreign policy between its two neighbors, China and India, while deepening engagement in multilateral platforms like the SCO.
