Kathmandu, Sept 30 – The Department of Prison Management on Monday said that 651 inmates remain at large following the September 8–9 Nakkhu Prison break during the Gen Z-led protests in Nepal.
According to officials, 1,280 prisoners had escaped, of whom 587 have since voluntarily returned or been transferred to other facilities. Authorities have now set an October 6 deadline for the remaining escapees to surrender at the nearest police station or prison.
“Failure to comply will result in strict legal action,” the department warned in its statement.
Appeal to Families and Public
Authorities urged families, local governments, security agencies, and the media to help locate the missing inmates and encourage them to surrender peacefully.
The Nakkhu Prison break marked one of Nepal’s largest prison escapes in recent decades, triggered by violent demonstrations against corruption and government restrictions.
The jailbreak occurred during widespread Gen Z-led protests earlier this month, which also forced the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Security agencies have since tightened patrols around Kathmandu Valley and other high-security prisons to prevent further unrest.
