Lahore, August 26: Authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab province have evacuated nearly two lakh residents from low-lying and flood-prone areas as water levels in major eastern rivers continue to rise following torrential monsoon rains.
“Indus, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers are experiencing low to high flooding owing to heavy rains in the catchment areas, and more downpours are expected over the next 48 hours,” Punjab Emergency Services Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad said on Tuesday.
The large-scale evacuation is underway in Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, and Narowal districts, where floodwaters pose immediate risk to communities. According to officials, at least 25,000 people have been moved into temporary shelters from the worst-affected areas. Relief teams are continuing to shift families, livestock, and essential supplies to higher ground.
Authorities have issued flood alerts across Punjab and warned residents to remain vigilant as rivers swell further under pressure from ongoing rainfall and upstream water flow. Disaster management agencies are coordinating with local administrations to ensure medical, food, and rescue support in the affected districts.
