New Delhi, India (August 2): The Delhi government has instructed all its departments and autonomous bodies to adopt stricter protocols for electronic waste disposal, with a new mandate to include e-waste recycling clauses in every procurement and service contract.
The directive, issued through a memorandum by the Finance Department, follows a committee meeting chaired by Delhi’s Chief Secretary. The committee emphasized the urgent need for regulatory steps to ensure e-waste is handled by authorized recycling agencies—a move expected to significantly curb environmentally damaging disposal practices across India’s capital.
From now on, tender documents for the procurement of goods, services, and infrastructure works will require bidders to commit to proper e-waste disposal through approved channels, ensuring compliance with India’s environmental regulations.
This marks a step forward in India’s broader push for sustainable public procurement and cleaner urban governance. As Delhi continues to grapple with rising volumes of electronic waste—ranging from discarded office equipment to outdated hardware—government intervention is being seen as a key lever for change.
