New Delhi, July 24 – The Monsoon Session of Indian Parliament saw continued disruption on Thursday, with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day amid loud protests by Opposition members demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar.
The Lok Sabha was first adjourned till 2 pm shortly after it convened at 11 am. Speaker Om Birla objected to members raising slogans and carrying banners, calling the conduct beneath the dignity of the House. Later, during a discussion on the Goa ST Assembly Constituency Readjustment Bill, Chair Krishna Prasad Tenneti adjourned the House for the day as the ruckus continued.
In the Rajya Sabha, the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill was under discussion when protests over the Bihar voter list issue led Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalita to adjourn proceedings.
Opposition MPs have been consistently demanding a debate on the SIR exercise in Bihar. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the government’s silence on the matter is obstructing the functioning of Parliament.
“For three days, we’ve been asking a basic question—will there be a discussion on the SIR or not?” Gogoi told ANI. “The Election Commission has shared its view, but that doesn’t mean Parliament can’t deliberate. We represent the people too.”
He emphasized that the Opposition wants to present the public’s view and also hear directly from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.
Both Houses will reconvene at 11 am on Friday.
