42 Injured as Youth Protests Over Social Media Ban Turn Violent in Nepal; Curfew Imposed in Kathmandu

Protests against Nepal’s social media ban turned violent in Kathmandu, injuring 42 and prompting a curfew as critics accuse the government of stifling free expression.

Kathmandu, September 8: At least 42 people were injured on Monday as protests against the Nepal government’s ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and X, escalated into violent clashes in the capital city, prompting authorities to impose a day-long curfew in key areas.

According to police, the unrest began when thousands of students and young protesters marched through Maitighar and Baneshwor areas, accusing the government of corruption and suppressing free speech by shutting down major social media networks.

Eyewitnesses reported that demonstrators breached police barricades near the Parliament building, leading to clashes in which security forces used baton charges, tear gas, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Local media reported at least one possible death, though authorities have yet to confirm any fatalities.

In response to the violence, the Kathmandu District Administration imposed a prohibitory order from 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm in several central areas. “No movement, demonstration, meeting, gathering, or sit-in will be allowed in the restricted zone,” said Chief District Officer Chhabi Lal Rijal in a public notice.

The protests mark one of the most serious public backlashes since the government announced the ban on social media platforms, claiming it was necessary to curb misinformation and maintain public order. Critics argue the move violates citizens’ right to free expression.
