LONDON, Sept 23 – Legendary cricket umpire Harold “Dickie” Bird, one of the sport’s most beloved figures, has died at the age of 92, the Yorkshire County Cricket Club announced on Monday.
Bird, who began as a player for Yorkshire and Leicestershire, went on to umpire 66 Test matches between 1973 and 1996, earning a reputation for his sharp judgment, humor, and long service to the game.
In 2014, he was appointed president of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, a role reflecting his decades-long commitment to cricket in his home county.
“The thoughts of everyone at Yorkshire are with Dickie’s family and friends,” the club said in a statement. “He will be remembered as one of the greatest characters in Yorkshire’s history.”
